Without Me
Hands of Troy
"Take your pills and take your lies / Stick em in, and let em bleed / Cause you ain't nuthin' without me"

The 11 tracks on ‘Dood’ range from sarcastic to sincere, spanning over a decade's worth of ambitions & challenges, freeways & traffic jams, laughter, life, and the universal constant … change.
From the irreverent snap of ‘Winner’ & ‘Without Me’, to the belief of ‘Dood’, vengeance of ‘Sound the Alarm’ and mortality of ‘In Waves’ … these tunes draw from late-night calls with friends, the chase for what's just out of reach, and love for the people who pick us up when we're down.
More on the inspo & story behind each track below…
"Take your pills and take your lies / Stick em in, and let em bleed / Cause you ain't nuthin' without me"
Some tunes need to ferment, rot, and then come back clean. Originally written and demoed in 2008, the first version of this parting-shot flex of a dis-track, aimed at no one in particular (maybe?), was originally inspired by “it's Brittney Bitch”'s juicy relationship with her parents and TMX's obsession with all of it. But this one evolved into something with a clearer target (maybe?) and a little more swagger & bite – because sometimes we gotta let the ego off-leash and see what happens, just to get it out. Maybe.
"As your breath gets heavy / I see the rot in your smile"
I've had the Beastie Boys, Jack White / White Stripes, and RATM on rotation in my core playlists for the last 20 years. Which might explain the driving bass line, power-riff and boom-bap of sound the alarm. I especially dig the way the bridge hits here. The lyrics are a straight up shot across the bow at the Svengali's we all encounter, who swing their plots and opinions at us like a bag of hammers. And unfortunately hammers can do damage. In response, visually I imagine a virtual Russell Crowe, as a circa 2020's Maximus Decimus Meridius, circling his opponent in the dust of the Colosseum – are you not entertained?!

"You're telling stories of yester-year / first place at the science fair / well that's sooooo great …"
This goes out to all the Wannabe winners, who Wannabe winning and Wannabe telling us we should Wannabe them. Which I know I do not Wanna be. They know who they are (do they?), and we know 'em when we see 'em (do we?). The music video for this one — that may never get shot — would be set at a 20-year high school reunion: invitations going out, red-carpet arrivals, egos & stereotypes galore, and a disco-ball dance-off in the old gym as the penultimate scene. So yeah, my dreams are clearly rooted in the 90's. Credit Adam Rohosy for the opening guitar riff. Winner!

When you're chasing that thing / you'll do anything / America ... and I can taste it / oh I can taste it.
We were living in Buffalo, New York from 2012 to 2015 and the first version of this tune (originally titled ‘merica) was written right around the time of polar vortex of 2013: ’When a cold wind blows, like a Buffalo snow, that's America'. Moved to LA in 2015, but revisited it again in 2016 following LeBron and the Cleveland Cavaliers' championship run – as CLE were just 3 hours down the road along Lake Erie. Early demos were entirely acoustic. I'd love to say the chaos of digital, social, media, politics, cultural divides and conflict that ultimately drove this track have since evened out, but ...
